Municipal Deposit Legislation On the Move

Momentum is building for our municipal deposit legislation. Yesterday the Assembly Banks Committee voted to advance A3262A to the Ways and Means Committee. In addition, we anticipate that the Senate may start acting on its same as version of the bill, S6079A as early as today. Right now the session is still scheduled to end tomorrow but that end date is looking increasingly unlikely.

Debate Over Title Insurers Marketing Practices Heats Up

Yesterday I got an email from a blog reader asking about the status of legislation that would effectively reverse regulations issued by the Department of Financial Services putting restrictions on the marketing activities of title insurance companies. A223A unanimously passed the Assembly. The bill is sponsored by Senator Neil Breslin. Politico New York reported that Attorney General James has written a scathing memo in opposition to the bill. According to the article she said that the bill would roll back protections for “working people and small businesses.”

Of course even if the legislation does pass there is nothing to keep the Governor from vetoing it.

Representative Engel Gets The Cortez Treatment

Interesting little political tidbit that I figured I would pass on. Prominent New York State Democrat Congressman Elliot Engel will face a primary opponent in his 2020 reelection campaign. This is noteworthy because middle school principle Jamaal is being supported by the same group which backed Alexandria Ocasio- Cortez in her upset election of Queens’s Representative Joseph Crowley. It will be interesting to see if this challenge can take hold in an environment where established incumbents are now well aware of the challenges posed by insurgents.
